My First Budget Address to the University Senate

Members of the Rutgers Community,

Today I addressed the University Senate to provide broad insight into the Rutgers budget. To my knowledge, this is the first time the Rutgers president has presented a budget address to the University Senate. It will not be the last time. Going forward it will be an annual tradition.

Information about the Rutgers annual budget, which totals more than $4.8 billion dollars, is available in detail here. The understanding that I sought to bring forth today was not simply about dollars and decimal points, but about the priorities that our budget reflects, the programs that it supports, and some of the budget challenges we confront.

In providing these insights, I am especially hoping to enrich the quality of the conversation when we discuss the university’s budget. I am seeking language that is clear and explanations that are frank and candid as we work to develop coherent plans for the future of the University.
