My Address to the University Senate

Dear Members of the Rutgers Community,

I write to share with you the report on Rutgers that I gave this afternoon at the University Senate’s first meeting of the academic year. 

In this annual address, which is posted on my website, I focused on the vital importance of supporting student success as the core of what we do as a university. I celebrated our recent gains in U.S. News national rankings as a marker of the vital work we’re doing across Rutgers in this regard. I also urged that as one university, we need to collaborate more, talking more often about those things that make us excellent.

In my remarks I emphasized that although Rutgers remains a predominantly in-person institution, we need to build on what we learned in the transition to remote education during the pandemic. We will be convening a council on online education to improve all aspects of the online experience across the student life cycle in order to better complement and enhance the work we already do in the physical classroom and laboratory. 

I also announced the expansion of our wonderfully successful Rutgers Summer Service Internship initiative to offer more students these public service opportunities and to add a component in Washington, DC, next summer.
