Prof. Mark Denbeaux
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – One of the country’s foremost experts on the Guantánamo Bay detention center, Professor Mark Denbeaux, director of the Seton Hall Law School Center for Policy and Research, will speak about “Gitmo” and its detainees Monday, Feb. 27 at Rutgers. His presentation is entitled, “And Then There Were Some: A Profile of Those Detainees in Guantánamo 10 Years After it Opened.”

Denbeaux’s 8 p.m. address at the annual Alice Evangelides Lecture and Forum will be held at Wood Lawn, 191 Ryders Lane on the Douglass Campus in New Brunswick. The lecture is free and open to the public. Email jmmurphy@rci.rutgers for limited seating availability.

The Center for Policy and Research is best known for its internationally recognized reports on the detention facilities at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Denbeaux’s interest in the conditions of detainment arose from his representation of two of its detainees. Following his visits to Gitmo and his participation in amicus briefs arising from the rules governing the hearings for “enemy combatants,” Denbeaux realized the need for analysis of the government’s assumptions and the principles governing the detention process.

The Guantánamo report series is primarily produced by Seton Hall law students. Several graduates have remained research fellows.

The Evangelides lectureship, presented by the Department of Political Science in the School of Arts and Sciences, honors the late Alice Sofis Evangelides, Rutgers’ first employee counsel, who had a strong interest in public law. Professor Milton Heumann hosts.
