Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations Offers New Bachelor of Science Degree Aimed at Transfers
SMLR adds graduate certificate program in Workplace Diversity
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers’ School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR) will now offer a “direct admit” Bachelor of Science degree in Labor and Employment Relations (LER) geared especially toward transfer students, and a new graduate certificate program, “Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace.”
The new bachelor’s degree provides flexible scheduling and a student-centered program, according to Professor Paula Voos, director of credit programs in the Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations. She noted the degree program combines online and in-person courses, and offers evening, weekend and daytime classes in New Brunswick and at off-campus locations.
Voos explained that incoming students can transfer a maximum of 60 credits from a county college or up to 90 credits from a combination of two- and four-year institutions. General education requirements can be met with an associate’s degree from a New Jersey county college.
Voos added that students whose work or family responsibilities force them to interrupt their studies can re-enroll without difficulty, and that visiting students who would prefer to “test drive” the program can enroll in up to two courses on a nonmatriculating basis.
“This degree can open a variety of career paths,” Voos said. “Students will learn effective management skills for corporate, government and community organizations, including working with such specialized groups as unionized employees, or representing employees as a union leader or professional staff person.” She added that the new bachelor’s degree will provide a strong foundation for such additional educational pursuits as a law degree, MBA or a master’s in Human Resources or Labor Relations.
Prospective Bachelor of Science students can apply for admission directly through SMLR. The school already offers a joint Bachelor of Arts degree in Labor Studies and Employment Relations with Rutgers’ School of Arts and Sciences.
The new graduate certificate program, “Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace,” is designed to give students tools to “successfully navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with an increasingly diverse workforce,” Voos explained. Students must successfully complete four master’s level courses, which also can count toward a master’s degree in either Labor and Employment Relations or Human Resource Management from SMLR. The program features flexible scheduling and online and in-class courses.
