Rutgers recycling effort needs your help

The mega-shredders, left to right: Nick Taylor, Rutgers Environmental Health and Safety (REHS); Bruce Rights, Office of Information Technology; Mark Kelly, REHS; Dianne Gravatt, Facilities; Stephen Dalina, University Archives; and Peter Shergalis, Material Services. The group is also coordinating Rutgers' efforts in RecycleMania.

Rutgers is vying with 200 colleges and universities from across the country in RecycleMania, a 10-week competition, which runs through April 7, to see which school can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate over the course of the competition.

The universitywide competition includes everyone at Rutgers – students, faculty, and staff. The goal of the event is to increase awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization. All schools are required to report measurements on a weekly basis in pounds.

To promote recycling and to ensure documentation is properly destroyed, Surplus and Material Services, Facilities Maintenance Services, and Rutgers Environmental Health and Safety (REHS) are planning a document and media shredding event during the first two weeks of February 2007, in conjunction with the RecycleMania competition.

This event will be provided at no cost to departments and will include the following media types: paper, CDs/DVDs, floppy disks, zip disks, magnetic tape (reels and cassettes), VCR tapes, and microfiche/microfilm. Special arrangements can be made for shredding confidential documents/media or if you must witness your items being shredded.  Please feel free to contact Mark Kelly of REHS at 732-445-2550 with questions.
