BACKGROUND: Beginning in 2008, Rutgers committed to selecting up to 200 low-income,   academically-talented students each year from the university’s host cities – Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway and Camden – to receive mentoring, educational support and cultural programming from eighth grade through high school. The selected students have parents who did not graduate from a four-year college.

Students who successfully complete the precollege program and are admitted to Rutgers will receive a four-year scholarship for the total cost of tuition. The program provides year-round support, including an intensive summer curriculum of college and career readiness courses in mathematics, chemistry, humanities, expository writing, art, college credit courses and more.

In addition, the university this year established the Future Scholars Mentoring Program for Rutgers undergraduate students. Offered through the Department of Psychology and the Civic Engagement and Service Education Partnerships program, this three-credit service learning opportunity prepares students to advise and mentor Rutgers Future Scholars.
