Dr. Alexander Gates
NEWARK, N.J. - A Rutgers University, Newark, geologist, an expert on earthquakes and tsunamis, can explain what caused the Japanese quake and the resulting tsunami.

ALEXANDER GATES is co-author of the "Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes New Edition" (Facts-on-File Inc., third edition, 2006).  His areas of special interest are faults and fault processes, including the generation of earthquakes and tsunamis. Dr. Gates commonly appears as an invited expert on earthquakes in newspapers, the evening news and on documentaries.  He is vice chancellor for research and chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
