New ‘Rock the Block’ event in New Brunswick kicks off celebration Friday

WHAT:

Rutgers Homecoming 2008, featuring a new public festival in New Brunswick and traditional game day and weekend events

WHO:

Rutgers alumni, faculty, students, football fans and community members

WHEN:

3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 18

WHERE:

Community wide festival featuring live music, food, and appearances by the Rutgers football team, cheerleaders and dancers, in Buccleuch Park, New Brunswick, bordered by College and Easton avenues (3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17)

 Scarlet Square, an alumni event adjacent to Rutgers Stadium on the Busch Campus in Piscataway, featuring music, games and the Kid’s Zone, an interactive playground (9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 18)

BACKGROUND:

For the first time, homecoming weekend will open with a communitywide event at Buccleuch Park, adjacent to the College Avenue Campus. Traditional homecoming events will take place throughout the weekend, wrapped around the football game at noon, Saturday, Oct. 18, between Rutgers and the University of Connecticut. In addition to the community event on Friday and Scarlet Square on Saturday, weekend events include the Huddle With the Faculty, a lecture series by prominent faculty; admissions tours for high school students; open houses at various academic departments; historical walking tours; a game-watch party on the Livingston Campus; and a Sunday golf outing.
