BACKGROUND: |
Established by Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick last year, the Rutgers Future Scholars Program is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to make a tuition-free college education possible for academically promising students who will be the first in their families to earn a four-year degree. Each year, 200 students about to enter eighth grade in public schools in Rutgers’ host communities of Camden, Newark, New Brunswick and Piscataway, will be selected as Rutgers Future Scholars on the basis of academic promise and economic need. Over the ensuing five years, the program will provide the students with academic and personal enrichment, mentoring and social development. Those who complete the program successfully and are admitted to Rutgers will attend tuition- and fee-free. They would enter Rutgers as members of the Class of 2017. |
