On most college campuses pizza is a hot commodity.  At Rutgers–Camden, a student group isn’t just slicing up pieces for themselves; they are making fresh pies for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden.

“Many times families are told unexpectedly that they need to visit the Delaware Valley region for life-saving medical treatment for their sick or injured child,” says Rutgers–Camden Democratic Club president Dave Spector. “The Ronald McDonald House provides these families with a place to stay and a hot meal while their children are being treated.”

Last month, the group’s 20 members shopped for ingredients and made pizzas for local Ronald McDonald House residents. The Rutgers–Camden students enjoyed experimenting with cooking while getting to know some special families.

“It was fun making the pizza and interacting with the families. They were so grateful and appreciative of our efforts,” notes Spector of Bellmawr, a Rutgers–Camden political science major.

Democratic Club in Kitchen
Comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students, the Rutgers–Camden Democratic Club was reinstituted last fall after more than 20 years since it was founded.

“Being a Democrat has more to do with helping people and devoting one’s time to the community than simply believing in a set of ideologies,” adds Spector, a 2006 Paul VI High School graduate.  Other activities the group has planned this semester include visits from local political figures and additional volunteer opportunities, like planting trees in Camden.
