NJ Chief Justice (Ret.) Deborah Poritz and Justice Virginia Long to Reflect on Career of Judge Sylvia Pressler in Nov. 30 Lecture at Rutgers–Newark Law School
NEWARK, NJ – When retired Appellate Division judge Sylvia B. Pressler, a 1959 graduate of Rutgers School of Law–Newark, died in February 2010, she was remembered by those in the legal community as a prolific jurist, a quintessential judge, and a brilliant legal mind. On November 30, 2010, the New Jersey Supreme Court’s retired Chief Justice Deborah Poritz and current Associate Justice Virginia Long will share their memories of her life and career in “Sylvia Pressler: Reflections on a Life in the Law – Part II.”
The occasion is the 28th Annual Chief Justice Joseph Weintraub Lecture, sponsored by the law school, its Alumni Association, and Gann Law Books. The lecture takes its title from the 2004 Weintraub Lecture, “Reflections on a Life in the Law,” which was delivered by Pressler shortly before she retired as Presiding Judge for Administration, Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey.
Pressler was the first woman to serve as Presiding Judge of the Appellate Division and only the second woman appointed to the division. At the time of her death Judge Pressler chaired the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee. She compiled and annotated the annual compendium of New Jersey court rules, Rules Governing the Courts of the State of New Jersey, and, during her appellate career, wrote more than 3,500 opinions.
