WHO: Newark Mayor Cory Booker WHEN: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24 WHERE: Nicholas Music Center, 85 George St., Douglass campus, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick
BACKGROUND: Cory A. Booker took the oath of office as mayor of New Jersey's largest city on July 1, 2006, following a sweeping electoral victory. He is just the third person to govern the city since 1970. Elected with a clear mandate for change, Booker immediately began to work on realizing his vision for the city: to make Newark America's leading urban city in safety, prosperity and the nurturing of family life.
In his first week in office, Booker introduced a 100-Day Plan to implement unprecedented reform in Newark. The major components of the plan are public safety, economic empowerment, nurturing families and children, and government reform. His areas of emphasis include adding police officers and refurbishing police stations, modifying the background check process for many city jobs, helping former offenders find employment in the city, improving delivery of the city's core services and expanding summer and year-round youth programs and services.
