NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The New Brunswick Development Corp. (Devco), the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers and Keating Urban Partners will receive a 2008 Smart Growth Award from New Jersey Future for their mixed-use, downtown anchor project, The Heldrich. The partners will be honored Thursday, June 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Newark Club in Newark.
According to New Jersey Future, the state’s leading smart-growth research and advocacy group, the New Brunswick project, a $120 million property at 10 Livingston Avenue, is one of seven forward-thinking projects that are changing the future of New Jersey by embracing smart growth – growth that improves communities while preserving and protecting the environment.
The Heldrich Redevelopment Project is a 365,000-square-foot mixed-use project adjacent to New Brunswick’s performing-arts venues, academic institutions, and county and municipal offices, and a short walk from public transportation. The Heldrich, which opened in 2007, comprises a 248-room hotel, a 50,000-square-foot conference center, academic space for Rutgers’ John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, ground-floor retail, restaurants, 54 underground parking spaces and 48 market-rate condominiums. The hotel and conference center share an adjacent, jointly constructed 820-space parking facility with other redevelopment projects and public uses of the area. Moreover, The Heldrich rehabilitated the 150-year-old Monument Park that it faces.
Toni Griffin, director of community development for the city of Newark, will offer remarks at the awards ceremony.
Tickets to the event are $100, and proceeds benefit New Jersey Future. For additional information, call 609-393-0008, ext. 101, or visit www.njfuture.org.
