Leader of Rutgers-Newark Street Law Program Honored as Young Lawyer of the Year by NJ State Bar Association

Newark, NJ – Alycia M. Guichard, Supervising Attorney and New Jersey Bar Fellow for the Street Law Program at Rutgers School of Law–Newark, has been selected to receive the Young Lawyer of the Year Award by the Young Lawyers Division of the New Jersey State Bar Association. The award salutes a young lawyer whose personal and professional achievements merit special recognition and who has made significant community and public service contributions. Guichard will accept the award on May 21 in Atlantic City during the opening session of the state Bar's annual meeting.

"Alycia is passionately committed to using the law to improve the lives of young people," said Dean Stuart L. Deutsch. "Her inspiring leadership of our student-initiated Street Law has expanded the reach and services of the program and demonstrated the impact of effective advocacy to our students." In addition to supervising Street Law, which trains law students to teach lessons about the law and civic responsibility to teenagers in Newark and surrounding communities, Guichard serves as interim director of the law school's Minority Student Program & Externships.

Guichard, a former foster child, has been a guest speaker at numerous conferences on children, families, and child welfare issues. In March 2007 she was invited by New York Chief Judge Judith Kaye to serve as a speaker and facilitator at "A Summit on Children: A National Judicial Leadership Summit for the Conference of Chief Justices." She is a law guardian with the Office of the Public Defender in Newark, providing legal representation to children in family court matters.

 Before joining the law school in January 2007, Guichard was a teaching fellow and summer law faculty member with the Street Law Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center. She received her A.A. from Westchester Community College, B.S. from New York University, J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, and her LL.M. in Advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center.
