Better than last year, and continuing to trend upward, according to the Rutgers-Camden Career Center. Employers expect to hire 15-20% more graduates directly from college, says James Marino, director of the Rutgers-Camden Career Center. Marino also notes exceptional demand for accounting, nursing, and computer science grads. Leading employers include Merrill Lynch, Commerce Bank, JPMorgan Chase, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Applications to graduate and medical schools also are up. Marino reports that Rutgers-Camden grads will enroll this fall in medical programs at the University of Pennsylvania, Jefferson, Temple, and others.
Marino attributes the upbeat preliminary report to a variety of reasons, including a 20% increase in traffic on the Rutgers-Camden online eRecruiting system; four major career and internship fairs held on campus during the year; and strong interest in the aggressive internship programs offered at Rutgers-Camden.
The same strength is reported by the Rutgers-Camden School of Law, where, according to early data, at least 40% of the Class of 2007 will serve in judicial clerkships, including six in federal district court, two for the New Jersey Supreme Court, and one for the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Judicial clerkships are coveted for their ability to quickly provide new law school graduates with a thorough understanding of the judicial system; upon completion of the clerkship, which typically lasts one year, the graduate has earned experience that helps to secure entry into the career of her/his choice.
At the Rutgers-Camden law school, another 40% of the Class of 2007 will be working at a law firm, 5% will be attorneys for the government (prosecutors, city attorneys, state legislative offices), and two students will be members of the JAG of the U.S. Marine Corps. Rutgers-Camden law grads will be working all across the nation.
