The Helene Fuld Trust Financial Aid Program for Baccalaureate Nursing Students is intended to create an endowment that will provide continuing financial aid to baccalaureate nursing students. With this grant, scholarships will be awarded to Rutgers College of Nursing baccalaureate students beginning this fall semester.
We are honored to receive this grant from the nations largest private funder devoted exclusively to nursing students and nursing education, said Felissa R. Lashley, dean and professor at Rutgers College of Nursing. Helene Fuld Health Trusts recognition of our world-class research activities, as well as our pioneering programs will afford nursing students the opportunity to participate and benefit from one of the most progressive and innovative programs in the state and in the country.
The financial structure of the Helene Fuld Trust grant provides $25,000 scholarship money for students for the first year, $17,500 for the second year and $7,500 in the third year for scholarships. At the end of three years, the accumulated $500,000 principal will be held as a permanent endowment fund, from which only the annual income from the fund will be expended.
The first $50,000 will be spent for the program to be effective immediately so that students will be receiving scholarships this fall semester, said Lashley. Ultimately, the principal will continue to grow to provide scholarships to our baccalaureate nursing students well into the future.
The Helene Fuld Health Trust is the nations largest private funder devoted exclusively to nursing students and nursing education. In 1935, Dr. Leonhard Felix Fuld and his sister, Florentine, created a foundation in honor of their mother, Helene. In 1965, the foundation was converted to the Helene Fuld Health Trust, and in 1969, HSBC Bank USA (formerly Marine Midland Bank) became its corporate trustee. HSBC Bank USA is currently responsible for overseeing and administering the Fuld Trust.
From its headquarters at Rutgers-Newark, Rutgers College of Nursing offers a broad range of academic programs on all three Rutgers campuses. The college offers a masters program with unique practitioner clinical specialties, and is the first to offer a doctoral (Ph.D) nursing degree in New Jersey.
