CAMDEN – Don’t let the cold weather stop you and your family from exploring nature’s beauty. A free indoor art event, “A Walk in the Woods,” will introduce audiences of all ages to an American landscape exhibition and inspire original artwork on Saturday, Jan. 7 at Rutgers–Camden.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. visitors can take a guided tour through the exhibit “Wild Land: Thomas Cole, and the Birth of American Landscape Painting,” as well as create nature sketchbooks, collage landscapes, tissue flowers, and even design their very own snowflakes.

“A Walk in the Woods” will take place in the Stedman Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Complex on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden campus. Light refreshments will be served.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. To register, call Noreen Scott Garrity at 856-225-6306 or ngarrity@camden.rutgers.edu.

The “Wild Land” exhibition aims to immerse viewers into a natural environment and offers insight into how concepts of nature have changed over time through large-scale graphics and innovative media features. In addition, work by contemporary American landscape painters including Michael Bartmann, Diane Burko, Daniel Chard, Randall Exon, Ann Lofquist, and Kyle Stevenson are showcased.

“Wild Land: Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Landscape Painting” has been made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibition was organized by the Thomas Cole National Historic Site/Cedar Grove in Catskill, New York and was adapted and toured by Mid-America Arts Alliance through NEW on the Road.  NEH on the Road offers an exciting opportunity for communities of all sizes to experience some of the best exhibitions funding by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Mid-America Arts Alliance was founded in 1972 and is the oldest regional nonprofit arts organization in the United States. For more information, visit www.maaa.org or www.nehontheroad.org.
