NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Enrollment for the Winter Session of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (OLLI-RU), has begun. Classes in the popular program for New Jersey residents older than 50 will run Jan. 6 to Feb. 4, 2010.
Active or retired instructors from high schools, colleges and universities, including Rutgers, teach the courses. There are no grades or tests, and a college degree is not required to enroll in any of the noncredit courses or seminars. Courses in art, economics, film studies, history, language, opera, poetry and political science are among popular offerings. Courses will meet once a week for five weeks.

Rutgers one of about 100 schools to receive funding from the Bernard Osher Foundation, established in 1977 to benefit a wide range of educational and cultural activities. Osher, a Maine native and San Francisco resident, is a successful businessman, community leader and patron of the arts and education. His wife, the Honorable Barbro Osher, consul general of Sweden in San Francisco, serves as chair of the foundation.
Founded in 1993, OLLI-RU is a unit of Rutgers’ Division of Continuing Studies. Since its inception, the program has grown from 80 students and four courses in its first semester to 1,140 students and 86 courses this fall. It is one of many programs that reflect the university’s dedication to helping state residents attain their lifelong learning and professional education goals.
