U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer at Rutgers Law School–Newark on April 28 for Conversation With NJN’s Due Process
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers School of Law–Newark will host the taping of a special Due Process show with the Honorable Stephen Breyer, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from 3 – 5 pm on Thursday, April 28, 2011. Justice Breyer will discuss his new book, Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View (Knopf, 2010), with Raymond Brown and Sandra King, co-hosts of NJN’s award-winning weekly series on law and justice issues.
In his widely-praised book, Justice Breyer considers such questions as: Why does the public accept the Court’s decisions as legitimate and follow them, even when those decisions are highly unpopular? What must the Court do to maintain the public’s faith? How can the Court help make our democracy work? Dahlia Lithwick, in her Slate review, wrote: “At a moment in which most of us talk about the Constitution in tones of rage and betrayal, Breyer’s optimism, modesty, and scholarly passion are welcome change. Making Our Democracy Work is an invitation to a much more civilized and nuanced conversation about the relationship between Americans, their government, and their freedom.”
