“This change communicates our school’s mission at the very broadest level of scholarship and inquiry,” said Dean Jorge Reina Schement. “Communication and information are part of every academic discipline in the school, and these fields are central to societal changes occurring as we speak.”
The Rutgers Board of Governors approved the name change last April. Commonly known as “SCILS” since the school’s establishment in 1982, the school will go by its full name. In instances where an acronym is required, the school will be referred to as “SC&I” (pronounced “sky”).
The School’s new web address is http://comminfo.rutgers.edu.
The School’s program offerings and requirements remain in place. The work and research of the School’s faculty will be organized around three initiatives outlined over the course of Schement’s first year as dean of the school: Health and Wellness; Community, Global Media, and Democracy; and Social Media Interaction and Collaborative Design. The School of Communication and Information is home to three academic departments: Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, and Library and Information Science. The School offers three undergraduate programs in communication; information technology and informatics; and journalism and media studies. Its graduate offerings include two master’s programs (communication and information studies, and library and information science) and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. The School’s Professional Development Studies office also provides continuing education to students throughout New Jersey and the globe.
