Rutgers Summer Programs in the Arts, Academics, Athletics Offer Fun and Learning for Children and Teens
NEW BRUNSWICK – Summer vacation may seem far away, but Rutgers is already gearing up for a season of fun for children and teens. This year's offerings include a wide assortment of classes, camp programs, field trips, athletic clinics, art classes and opportunities for academic enrichment on the New Brunswick Campus. Happy Campers, June 28-Aug. 20, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sponsored by the Douglass Psychology Child Study Center on the Douglass Campus in New Brunswick, HappyCampers is a program for children entering 1st through 5th grades. A CIT group is available for older campers (6th grade and up). Activities include recreational swimming, gymnastics, arts and crafts, science projects, gardening, cooking and weekly trips. Fee: $275 per week; includes all activities, fieldtrips, care from 7:30am-6pm, hot lunch and 2 snacks. Call 732-932-8881. -
The Lindley G. Cook 4-H Camp of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, July and August
An overnight summer camp in Stokes State Forest in Branchville offers campers boating and swimming on a privatelake, outdoor education, drama, arts and crafts, shooting sports and leadership development workshops. Sessions are one week and open to those completing 3rd through 10th grades. Teenagers who have completed 9th and 10th grades may be eligible for a counselor-in-training program. Fee: $450 per week. Rutgers employees are eligible for a $50 per week discount and all registrants who sign up and pay by the 1st of March are entitled to an additional $50 discount per week. Call 973-948-3550.

Summer Art Camp at the Zimmerli Art Museum, weekly programs, June 28 to July 30, half- or full-day classes, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Artists, ages 7 to 14, can learn drawing, painting, watercolors, cartooning and much more. Fees: $165 half day/$355 full day per one-week session; $135/$285 for members of the museum. For information, call 732-932-7237, ext. 615. -

Rutgers Summer Band and Orchestra Camp, July 11-16
Students in grades 8-12 perform under the batons of renowned conductors and enjoy a week of intense musical training on the New Brunswick Campus. Instructors are Mason Gross college faculty members and leading professional musicians and music educators from the New York/New Jersey area. In addition to daily large-ensemble rehearsals, students participate in group lessons; clinics and master classes; electives (such as conducting, music theory, reed-making, drum circle, yoga); and sectional rehearsals taught by master artists. Fees: $675 includes tuition, room, board and activities); or $375 for tuition only -
Rutgers Summer Jazz Institute, July 25-30
A comprehensive workshop environment on the New Brunswick Campus for musicians ages 13-20 interested in improving their jazz improvisation, small group, and large-ensemble skills. Students participate in daily listening sessions, master classes, jazz theory classes, and large-ensemble and small group rehearsals with the distinguished jazz faculty of the Mason Gross School of the Arts. Evening activities for resident campers include faculty recitals, a trip to the New York City jazz scene, and a trip to Cecil’s jazz club for an on-stage jazz jam of their own. Fees: $875 includes tuition, room, board and activities, or $525 for tuition only. -
Indian Performing Arts Summer Camp, June 28-July 2
Children ages 8 to 15 learn about Indian music, dance, and culture, participate in daily yoga classes, vocal training, rhythm sessions, dance and movement classes, instrumental exposure, audio-visual sessions, and discussion forums under the guidance of the best gurus (faculty) imaginable. Camp hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with before and after care available. Tuition: $335 (Sibling discounts available) -
Summer Acting Conservatory, June 27-July 25
Talented high school students are invited to apply to the four-week conservatory acting program taught by theater professionals. Training includes acting, movement, voice/speech, theater history, and master classes. A musical theater track is taught by experienced Broadway professionals. Fee: $4,750 includes tuition, room, board, and activities. -
Rutgers Dance Camp, July 5-10
Dancers ages 12 to18 may apply for intensive study in modern dance with renowned Mason Gross faculty. Studentstake classes in contemporary dance, ballet, theater work, improvisation and repertory. The week includes a field trip to New York City for a dance concert and concludes with a public showing of the participants’ work. Fee: $1,150 includes tuition, room, board and activities. -
Rutgers Dance Conservatory, July 12-23
A two-week conservatory program geared toward students ages 15-20 who plan to pursue a career in dance. The program is designed to prepare the intermediate and advanced dancer to enter a college dance program and help realize his/her goals in the dance world. Students take daily classes in ballet and modern dance. Additional classes include modern partnering, modern and ballet repertory, jazz, hip-hop, and improvisation. The program features a day of master classes by New York-area artists, a field trip to New York City to attend a dance concert, and research into the country’s top dance programs. Fee: $2,300 includes tuition, room, board and activities. -
Kids Create (ages 6-12), Aug. 2-6 and 9-13
Fill your child’s summer days with music, dance, theater and visual arts. In this day camp, children develop their imaginations and skills through drawing, painting, collage, movement, music, improvisational theater, creative dramatics and playwriting. Classes are taught by professional musicians and artists from the Mason Gross School. Each week’s offerings are unique, so children may participate in one or both weeks. Camp weeks end in showcases in which campers have the opportunity to perform and display their art. Before and after care are available. Fees: $335 per week (Sibling discounts are available.) -
Rutgers Summer Opera Camp, July 18-23
An intense program designed for students ages 14-18 to participate in master classes with Mason Gross faculty, costuming workshops, opera history classes, and staging/blocking sessions. Specific repertory assignments are based on ability levels and voice ranges. The camp ends with a final performance, allowing students to showcase their prepared operas and operettas. Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics, July 5-30
This residential program on Rutgers’ Busch Campus in Piscataway is designed to encourage talented high school students to consider careers in the mathematical sciences. Students will participate in instructional sessions; technology-based activities (including a Robotics Challenge); and workshops on careers in the mathematical sciences. Informal evening and recreational programs also will be provided. The program is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS). Fee: $3,500 (scholarships available). Call 732-445-4065. -
Douglass Science Institute Program Series, June to July
In this residential program series sponsored by the Douglass Project for Rutgers Women in Math, Science and Engineering, girls entering the ninth grade apply for the four-year program series. The program features intense, hands-on science experiences on Rutgers' Douglass Campus in New Brunswick. Fee: $735.00 covers all residential costs including room and meals, program and lab materials as well as all field trip expenses. SPARK (Summer Program at Rutgers for Kids), July 12-Aug. 6
SPARK is a summer program designed to broaden the mind and encourage creativity, discovery and a passion for learning for children in grades four through nine. Campers select from a wide range of academic courses and activities that are highly active and hands-on. TARGET (The Academy at Rutgers for Girls in Engineering and Technology), six one-week sessions, June 29-July 31
Sponsored by the School of Engineering Office of Student Development, TARGET introduces engineering to sixth- through 11th-grade girls through hands-on workshops ranging from lip-balm manufacturing to roller-coaster building. Summer Reading Programs for Children and Adults, one day a week for five-week sessions, June through August
Offered by Rutgers’ Division of Continuous Education in partnership with the Institute of Reading Development, programs for pre-kindergarten through adults are taught at 40 locations throughout the state. Age-appropriate instruction ranges from phonics and reading readiness through comprehension, retention and vocabulary building. Fees: $249 or $329 plus materials, depending on level.
