NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers’ Center for Green Building today released New Jersey Green Home Remodeling
Green building cover
Guidelines Version 1.0
during the New Jersey State League of Municipalities 94th Annual Conference in Atlantic City. The documentation details green building practices homeowners or remodeling professionals can incorporate into common home remodeling projects.

“The case studies that feature New Jersey green home remodeling projects are one of the most exciting features of the guidelines,” said Maren Haus, research project manager at the Rutgers Center for Green Building. “They bring the guidelines to life, providing concrete examples of how green home remodeling strategies can be healthy for occupants, easy on the environment and save money.”

The guidelines contain a menu of best practices organized by major building systems. Chapters are organized by common remodeling projects: kitchen, bath and living spaces; finished basement and major addition; weatherization and energy; and outdoor living and landscaping. Each section addresses the following areas:

·         Health and safety

·         Green home maintenance and housekeeping

·         Best practice strategies

·         Resources and references

·         Case studies

·         Green products and services

·         Glossary of terms.

The development of the New Jersey Green Home Remodeling Guidelines was funded by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which contributed a grant for workshops and other marketing activities. The center developed the guidelines with extensive input and review by an expert advisory group comprising residential building and remodeling professionals, interior designers, landscape architects and experts in the field of green building and energy-efficient design. The Rutgers Center for Green Building, housed at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, serves as the umbrella organization for existing and proposed initiatives being implemented through separate centers at the Bloustein School, the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, the School of Engineering and other Rutgers units integral to developing and employing innovative green building and sustainable community strategies. The center conducts applied research, works with industry and government to promote green building and sustainability concepts, and develops undergraduate, graduate and professional education programs.
