(NEWARK, N.J., Oct. 6, 2008) – The College of Nursing at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invited a faculty member  from the University of the Southern Mountains, the State University of Oaxaca (SUNEO), Mexico to discuss a possible collaboration between the two schools on Oct. 7.

Corinna Alba Alba, professor and chief of nursing careers, will meet the Rutgers College of Nursing faculty during a luncheon reception and session. Alba is visiting Rutgers University as part of Health Across Borders II, a one-day conference to examine issues of health and nutrition in Mexican communities in New Jersey and Oaxaca, Mexico.

“Alba’s visit is in response to Rutgers University President Richard L. McCormick’s efforts to encourage collaborative efforts among programs that exist in both schools,” said Interim Dean Lucille Joel. “We are looking forward to an informative and productive session.”

Many of the Mexican immigrants living in New Jersey come from Oaxaca, Mexico including many of the women who are enrolled in Rutgers College of Nursing Assistant Professor Karen D’Alonzo’s physical activity intervention program. D’Alonzo was also one of the speakers at the Health Across Borders II conference that was held at the Busch Campus Center in Piscataway, N.J. on Oct. 6.

From its headquarters in Newark, Rutgers College of Nursing offers a broad range of academic programs on all three Rutgers campuses. The college offers a master’s program with unique practitioner specialties, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, and was the first to offer a Ph.D. nursing degree in New Jersey.
