Rutgers Clinical Affiliates Nationally Recognized as Best Maternity Care Hospitals by Newsweek

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and University Hospital serve as teaching hospitals for two Rutgers medical schools

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, and University Hospital, Newark, which serve as teaching hospitals for Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, respectively, were named to Newsweek’s 2021 list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals. 

Best Maternity Care Hospitals is part of Newsweek’s Best Health Care series, powered by data from The Leapfrog Group. Hospitals named as a Best Maternity Care Hospital have met certain standards such as achieving lower rates of C-sections, early elective delivery and episiotomy, as well as assuring bilirubin screening for all newborns and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section. 

“We are delighted that both of our academic health centers, University Hospital, Newark, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, were included among the 217 healthcare facilities in the United States that were highlighted as the Best Maternity Care Hospitals in 2021,” said Robert L. Johnson, dean of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and interim dean of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “This achievement results from the diligence and dedication of our faculty and staff in achieving the highest quality and best outcomes for all of the patients we serve in our communities.”

Sauer, professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “It is gratifying to know that despite the pandemic, our health care team was able to maintain a consistently high level of care to patients who so often present with challenging and complex obstetrical problems.”
