The Rutgers University–Camden music program will ring in the spring season with a diverse selection of free, public concerts. Five different programs will be presented throughout April and May, featuring music ranging from classical to contemporary. In addition to the collaborative Spring Serenade Concert, each of the music program’s premier ensembles will perform a concert of its own.
All concerts will be held in the Walter K. Gordon Theater, the Mallery Room, or the Black Box Studio, located in the Fine Arts Complex on the Rutgers–Camden campus.
The Spring Choir Extravaganza will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in the Walter K. Gordon Theater. This collaborative choir performance will feature the Rutgers University Singers performing a wide variety of music under the direction of Julia Zavadsky, a part-time lecturer of music at Rutgers–Camden. Several other guest choirs will also join the Rutgers University Singers, including the Camden Creative Arts High School Choir and the Dona Nobis Pacem Choir.
The Madrigal Ensemble, under the direction of Julianne Baird, a distinguished professor of music at Rutgers–Camden, will next present a concert of lively classical music at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the Mallery Room.
The Rutgers–Camden Performance Ensemble, under the direction of Stefán Örn Arnarson, theater programs director at Rutgers–Camden, will take audiences on a ride of epic proportions with a performance of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, in the Walter K. Gordon Theater. The ensemble, who will perform all songs from the album, plus some other favorites, features 20 students playing a variety of orchestral instruments.
The Rutgers Camden Jazz Ensemble will host a concert at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the Black Box Studio. Under the direction of Eric Polack, a part-time lecturer of music at Rutgers–Camden, this swinging band demonstrates its versatility in a program that spans several genres.
The Spring Serenade Concert, the annual collaborative performance, will conclude the concert season at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1 in the Walter K. Gordon Theater. This flagship concert will feature the Rutgers–Camden Jazz Ensemble, String Orchestra, BeatleManiacs, Rutgers University Singers, Madrigal Ensemble, and several soloists. All will perform a variety of different tunes that evoke the spirit of the spring season.
