CAMDEN – Students in the Rutgers School of Business—Camden aren’t just excelling in the classroom, they are winning accolades in national competitions.

In a few short months, the student group that organized the campus chapter of DECA, the global organization that prepares for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, has not only grown its membership, but placed in conferences against peer institutions.

“Our Rutgers–Camden education is preparing us to compete with longstanding chapters,” says senior marketing major Katie Walsh, who with twin brother Kevin and sophomore Bryan Barkow, founded the Rutgers–Camden chapter.  “These awards are proof that we are getting a great education here, when we are tested outside of the classroom and applying what we are learning in a real-world setting with business students from across the country.”

A group of 11 Rutgers–Camden students participated in the George Washington Regional DECA Conference on Feb. 25. Awards were garnered in accounting (Ben Wann, second place; Shiv Ghetia, third place); marketing management (Sam McClernan, second place); food services management (Nick Taylor, second place); professional sales (Leah Shamilov, first place); and advertising campaign (Megan Wadsworth and Katie Walsh, first place).

Last semester the Rutgers–Camden group competed in the annual Collegiate Leadership Academy in New York City, where students from more than 30 different colleges and universities divided into case-study teams and presented their own case-study solutions to a panel of industry leaders.

According to Walsh, competing in these competitions, not only provides networking opportunities, with other students and leaders in fields that serve as judges, but allows members to sample life in other cities.

“We’ve gotten to see life in New York and DC to narrow down where we can see ourselves living and working. Plus, we are talking with students from other business schools in the nation, too,” adds Walsh.

The Rutgers–Camden chapter of DECA aims to prepare students for careers in business by integrating skills learned in the classroom through conferences, internships, scholarships, competitions, and professional networking.
