Deanell Reece Tacha, Pepperdine Law Dean and Retired Federal Judge, to Deliver Garth Lecture at Rutgers–Newark Law School

NEWARK, NJ – Deanell Reece Tacha, Dean of Pepperdine University School of Law and Judge (Ret.) of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, will deliver the Second Annual Judge Leonard I. Garth Lecture at Rutgers School of Law–Newark on November 15, 2012 at 6 pm. The title of her lecture is “The Model of the Good Lawyer and Judge – Judge Garth!”

Dean Tacha has had a distinguished career in the federal judiciary and higher education. Before joining Pepperdine Law as Dean in June 2011, she spent more than 25 years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, seven of which were as Chief Judge. In 2007 she was the recipient of the Devitt Award, the highest honor given to a federal judge for distinguished lifetime service. In 2008 she received the American Bar Association’s John Marshall Award for positively impacting the justice system.

Judge Garth was in private practice before his 1969 nomination by President Richard M. Nixon as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. He was elevated to the Third Circuit in 1973 and assumed senior status in 1986.

The law clerks and family of Judge Garth, and his former firm, Cole Shotz Meisel Forman & Leonard, PA, created the Garth Lecture Series in honor of their mentor and to promote the advancement of the law as the foundation of a just and free society so amply demonstrated by Judge Garth’s example.
