Beckton, Dickinson contributes to Rutgers School of Nursing Student Emergency Fund

The medical technology company’s $100,000 donation expands assistance available to undergraduate and graduate students facing unexpected emergencies

Becton, Dickinson and Company, a medical technology business also known as BD, has contributed $100,000 to support Rutgers nursing students contending with financial challenges.

The Rutgers School of Nursing Student Emergency Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate nursing students when unforeseen circumstances threaten their ability to continue their education.

The fund started in 2011 with a $12,000 gift from New Jersey Association for Continuity of Care. It has since grown to meet the demands of nursing students in need of emergency support especially during and after COVID.

The fund provides financial help to students facing urgent, unplanned expenses. In recent semesters, students have requested assistance to pay for required textbooks, cover temporary housing costs following a house fire and manage medical expenses. Other requests have included help with transportation to clinical placements and costs related to licensing exams.

“This generous gift from BD reflects a deep commitment to nursing education and to the students who will care for our communities,” said Angela Starkweather, dean and professor of the Rutgers School of Nursing. “Emergency financial challenges can arise suddenly and through no fault of a student’s own. BD’s support helps ensure that temporary setbacks do not become permanent barriers to completing a nursing degree.”

Starkweather said sustained investment in nursing education is especially important as demand for nurses continues to increase. 

“New Jersey, like many states, is facing a significant nursing shortage, and that challenge extends far beyond our borders,” she said. “Support for nursing education must span the full continuum – from students preparing to enter the profession to registered nurses pursuing advanced practice roles – so we can meet the evolving health care needs of our communities.”
