Emmet A. Dennis

The Rutgers community mourns the loss of Emmet A. Dennis, former professor and dean of University College at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, who passed away in March. A renowned scientist and scholar, Dennis held several distinguished academic posts during his career. He served as president of the University of Liberia from 2008 to 2017.

A native of Liberia, Dennis joined Rutgers in 1969 as an assistant professor in the Department of Zoology. From 1975 to 1981, he was an adjunct associate professor while serving as director of the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research, a World Health Organization Collaborating Unit, which he founded. Dennis authored numerous scientific papers in the field of parasitology. Among his many other professional posts, he was chair of the board of trustees of Tubman University. In 2018, the Liberian academic community launched an annual science conference named in his honor.
