NEWARK, NJ – Hon. Morris Stern, Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, will give the Allan Axelrod Lecture at Rutgers School of Law–Newark on Thursday, March 24, 2011, from 11:20 am to 12:35 pm in the Baker Trial Courtroom. His topic is “Upheaval in New Jersey Homeownership: Mortgage Foreclosures and Bankruptcy.”

The lecture honors the late Allan Axelrod, William J. Brennan, Jr. Professor of Law Emeritus at Rutgers School of Law–Newark and a legendary figure in the history of the law school, where he taught from 1948 to 2007. Axelrod, who died in August 2008, was regarded as one of the ablest, most penetrating, and most exciting law teachers of his era. His fields of special interest were Contracts, Property, Commercial Law, and Bankruptcy.

Judge Stern is a 1965 honors graduate of Rutgers School of Law–Newark, where he was an editor of the Rutgers Law Review and Dean’s Award recipient upon graduation. He received his LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 1975.

After law school, Judge Stern served as law clerk to Hon. Robert A. Matthews, Superior Court of New Jersey, Chancery Division, Hudson County, followed by two years on active duty as a Captain in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. He was a partner in the law firm of Stern, Dubrow, and Marcus for 30 years, specializing in commercial litigation and transactions. During that time, Judge Stern was an Adjunct and Visiting Professor at Rutgers School of Law–Newark, teaching Bankruptcy and Commercial Law. He also served on a number of state and local boards, and bar committees, including, among others, as Commissioner of the New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority, public member of the New Jersey Insurance Underwriting Association (New Jersey Fair Plan), chair of a Supreme Court of New Jersey District Ethics Committee, and member of the editorial board of the New Jersey Law Journal.

Judge Stern was appointed to the bench in 2001 and is sitting in the Newark vicinage of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.
