UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT

An estimated 12,651 graduates – a record – will receive degrees from Rutgers this year. They include approximately 8,636 baccalaureate degrees, 2,762 master’s degrees, 1,252 doctorates and one education specialist.

RemarksEleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation and former president, National Organization for Women, will be the keynote speaker. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Gov. Chris Christie, the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, will offer brief remarks.

Student Speakers: Julie Bianchini, Hillsborough, N.J., Class of 2010, School of Arts and Sciences, majoring in molecular biology and biochemistry and minoring in science, technology and society; Jonathan Maddison, Voorhees, N.J., Class of 2010, Camden College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in political science and minoring in American studies and national security studies.

Honorary degree recipients: Besides Eleanor Smeal and Gov. Chris Christie, Rutgers will present honorary degrees in New Brunswick to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia (Doctor of Laws); The Rev. M. William Howard Jr., a member of Rutgers’ Board of Governors since 2004 and chair since 2007 (Doctor of Humane Letters); and author Judy Blume, whose 28 books have been translated into 31 languages with more than 80 million copies sold (Doctor of Letters). Dr. Carl Djerassi, emeritus professor of chemistry at Stanford University and scientist, author, playwright and philanthropist, will receive his honorary Doctor of Science degree May 17 at the joint Rutgers-Newark College of Arts and Sciences-University College convocation, where he will be keynote speaker.

General information: All undergraduate and graduate degrees are conferred at this ceremony. The Graduate School-New Brunswick will award 782 degrees. The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology in New Brunswick (55 graduate degrees) and the School of Arts and Sciences (1,559 undergraduate degrees) will not hold a public ceremony. Schools and colleges holding additional convocations follow in chronological order.
