Adam Scales
CAMDEN — Upon his arrival at the Rutgers School of Law–Camden, Adam Scales was happy to discover a team of faculty members just as passionate for teaching as he.

“The opportunity to work with the top-notch faculty here at Rutgers–Camden, and the fact that some of them have the same interests as I do, is very exciting,” says Scales, a professor of law at Rutgers–Camden.

“There aren’t many law schools that can say they have more than one insurance law professor. I’m eager to work with my colleagues,” he says.

Scales comes to Rutgers–Camden after teaching for 14 years at Washington and Lee University School of Law. An expert in tort law, Scales is the author of six published articles on topics like corporate succession in insurance, the evolution of accidental death insurance, and flood insurance.

“I tend to focus on the intersection of torts and insurance,” Scales explains. “A lot of what happens in the tort system can be understood only if you think about the insurance side. Usually, I look for areas in which the tort system has been undone by some insurance perspective.”

Scales is teaching courses in tort law this semester and says he hopes to inspire them to think beyond understanding the basics of tort law.

“The students here are eager and excited to learn,” Scales says. “I want them to understand the basic rules in torts and it’s always rewarding to hear them tell me that they start seeing torts wherever they look even after they leave class. But I also want them to constantly engage in the question of what is justice. It’s my goal to inspire them to emerge from my class prepared to answer that question from many different perspectives.”

A Philadelphia resident, Scales received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan.
