Senior District Court Judge Dickinson R. Debevoise to Discuss Supreme Court Exclusionary Rule Decision in April 22 Rutgers Law School Lecture
Newark, NJ – The Honorable Dickinson R. Debevoise, Senior Judge, United States District Court, District of New Jersey, will deliver the 27th Annual Chief Justice Joseph Weintraub Lecture on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Rutgers School of Law–Newark. The lecture will begin at 6 pm. Judge Debevoise will present “Reflections Upon Herring v. United States: The Dangers of Narrowing Protections of Civil Rights in the Pressure Cooker Environment in Which We Live.” The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Herring v. United States limits the application of the rule that excludes the use of evidence obtained by police misconduct.
Judge Debevoise has served for almost 30 years as Judge for the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, 14 of them as its senior member. He began his legal career in 1952 as a clerk for Chief Judge Phillip Forman of the United States District Court at Trenton. From 1953-1957 he was an associate with Riker, Emery & Danzig, and was a partner at Riker, Danzig, Scherer & Debevoise from 1957-1979. He was active in a number of civil rights organizations and for a short period represented civil rights workers in Mississippi during the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer. From 1965-1970, Judge Debevoise was president and trustee of the Newark Legal Services Project. He also has been a chairman of the Governor’s Workmen’s Compensation Study Committee, the Disciplinary Review Board of the New Jersey Bar, and the Lawyers Advisory Committee of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and was a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct.
Judge Debevoise earned his B.A. from Williams College and his LL.B. from Columbia Law School. While at Williams, he entered active duty with the United States Army, serving in combat campaigns in France and Germany. He was released at the rank of sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 1945. After law school, he served in the Korean War as a first lieutenant.
