Students represent New Jersey’s most accomplished high school graduates
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Enrollment of Rutgers Presidential Scholars will set a record this week when 117 of New Jersey’s most accomplished high school graduates are expected to start classes on the New Brunswick and Newark campuses. The number of Rutgers Presidential Scholars has nearly doubled since 2007, when 59 enrolled.
The average Rutgers Presidential Scholar has an SAT (critical reading, math and writing) of more than 2,300, and was ranked in the top 3 percent of his or her graduating class.
Students selected for this elite scholarship also must complete an essay in which they demonstrate their potential contribution to the university community through a record of specialized talents, leadership, community service and work experience.
This year’s Presidential Scholars come from 70 New Jersey communities. The program awards full tuition and honors program admission to recipients. The majority of scholars are enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences on the New Brunswick Campus, while others will attend the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, the School of Engineering, Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick, College of Nursing, Newark College of Arts and Sciences and the Mason Gross School of the Arts.
"The record number of top-achieving New Jersey students enrolling as Presidential Scholars reflects Rutgers’ growing reputation for offering outstanding opportunities for academic advancement, undergraduate research, overseas study and community service to its students," said Courtney McAnuff, vice president for enrollment management.
This fall, Rutgers is enrolling the largest first-year class in its history, with an estimated 7,300 students expected universitywide. The university’s total undergraduate and graduate enrollment also is expected to set a record at more than 56,400.
