Third annual university gathering offers more than 500 free performances, exhibitions, activities, sporting events and children’s activities
WHAT: A full day of free performances, lectures, exhibits, games, children’s activities, hands-on learning and athletic competitions as the state university throws wide its doors to New Jersey residents

HIGHLIGHTS FOR POSSIBLE COVERAGE:
Rutgers and the sun, all day, College Avenue Campus Rutgers is committed to improving solar technology. On the College Avenue Campus, visitors can explore a virtual prototype of an innovative solar-powered house. That house, being built this summer in Newark, will be the Rutgers/Team New Jersey entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon (www.solardecathlon.gov/). Visitors will also see presentations on other Rutgers solar initiatives that are significantly reducing the university’s dependence on fossil fuels.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn marathon reading, all day, College Avenue Campus. Volunteers from the Department of English will read this much-loved – and controversial – classic tale of youth and adventure in pre-Civil War America.
Chinese opera for kids, all day, College Avenue Campus. The Confucius Institute will give children a taste of this classic Chinese cultural expression. Activities will include face painting, craft making, a stage costume showcase, and Chinese musical instruments.
It’s all about the infrastructure, all day, Busch Campus. Visitors can see the latest in alternative-fuel vehicles, solve traffic safety problems, and try their hands at building a bridge.
Phenomenal Faraday Physics Lecture, 2:30 p.m., Physics Lecture Hall Auditorium, Busch Campus. Watch flowers shatter like glass, hydrogen balloons explode, and a fire extinguisher rocket a person across the room, as Rutgers brings its popular holiday season physics lecture to Rutgers Day.
Stop Hunger Now, all day, Busch Campus, Werblin Recreation Center, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join in or watch an assembly line of volunteers create thousands of food packages for the needy. The program raises awareness of food insecurity and provides food for people around the world. Anyone age 5 or older can lend a hand.
World Poetry Day, Loree Hall parking lot, Cook/Douglass Campus, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Department of Comparative Literature invites visitors to listen to poetry readings in several languages by writers, faculty and students.
Boisterous biochemistry and mischievous microbes, Lipman Hall lawn, Cook/Douglass Campus, all day. We live in a microbial world! See microbes in action and enzymes in catalysis, discover the unseen microbes of Passion Puddle, and learn how to isolate DNA from a pea.
Craft Path, Woodlawn, all day, Cook/Douglass Campus. Indulge in more than 80 craft tents featuring beautiful handmade crafts from all over the Eastern seaboard. This selective, juried craft show celebrates unique arts and artists.
GETTING AROUND:
Free parking will be available in all university lots. A free Rutgers Day Bus Loop will run continuously among the Busch, College Avenue, and Cook/Douglass campuses with stops in downtown New Brunswick. Check the website (rutgersday.rutgers.edu) for public transit information, directions, and maps.
