RETIRED BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN A. HURLEY TO CELEBRATE

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS GRADUATION FROM RUTGERS

AND AIR FORCE ROTC COMMISSIONING AT MAY 15 CEREMONY

WHAT:

Class of 2007 ROTC commissioning ceremony at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; 11 Army and six Air Force second lieutenants will be commissioned.

WHO:

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. John A. Hurley will celebrate his 1957 graduation from Rutgers as a member of Phi Beta Kappa as well as the golden anniversary of his ROTC commissioning as a second lieutenant. He will administer the oath to the Air Force cadets. Retired Army Brig. Gen. Bruce B. Bingham will be speaker. In 1968, he graduated from Rutgers College as a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned a second lieutenant through the ROTC.

BACKGROUND: Hurley was a Distinguished Military Graduate and served on various active duty and reserve assignments in Europe, Asia, Central America and the Middle East, principally in intelligence and international programs. He also was a USAF White House Social Aide under Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy. He is a rated Senior Parachutist and was promoted to brigadier general, USAF Reserve in 1988. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit. In his parallel federal Civil Service career, he was promoted to Charter Senior Executive Service. He is an adjunct professor at the National Defense Intelligence College, Washington, D.C.

Upon graduation, Bingham served in Vietnam as a first lieutenant with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). After leaving active duty, he served for eight years in several positions as an Army reservist with the 1st Battalion, 11th Special Forces Group. Following a stint as a military admissions liaison officer for the U.S. Military Academy, he commanded the 408th Personnel Services Company at Fort Totten, N.Y.

In 1990, Bingham deployed to Operation Just Cause in Panama. In 1994, he became Civil Affairs Advisor to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command for the Haitian intervention and subsequently led the Ministerial Advisory Team in Haiti. Bingham retired from the military in 2001. He is executive director of Capstone Valuation Services LLC, in New York.
