NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – With winter break travel budgets being about the only thing tighter than the seasonal job market, college students are increasingly using the break between semesters to grab a few extra credits toward their academic degrees. But students considering attending Rutgers-New Brunswick had better hurry. Online registration for Winter Session for current Rutgers students closes Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., and in-person registration for all students, including visitors returning home for the holidays, ends Monday, Dec. 7.

Late registration for all, which carries an additional $50 fee, runs Dec. 8-23. Classes begin Monday, Dec. 28 and end Friday, Jan. 15, 2010.

“With the faltering economy adversely affecting travel and shopping plans, and even short-term employment opportunities, many students are taking a pragmatic view,” said Elizabeth Hough, director of Summer and Winter Sessions on the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers. “A survey we conducted last winter showed the great majority – more than 85 percent – of Winter Session students took courses required for their academic degrees.” She added that the between-semesters session also served students by providing additional sections for overenrolled courses, and offering courses rarely scheduled during fall and spring semesters.

“There’s an incentive for out-of-state students returning home for the holidays. They benefit from lower, in-state tuition. But students should check with their own colleges that credits earned at Rutgers will count toward their graduation requirements,” Hough cautioned.
