CAMDEN – Scholar and poet M.A. Rafey Habib will present “An Evening of Islamic Poetry” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, during Rutgers–Camden’s Cappuccino Academy.

A professor of English at Rutgers–Camden, Habib is the author of five acclaimed books, including An Anthology of Modern Urdu Poetry, in English Translation, with Urdu Text, and writes his own verse as well. 

“The issues and events in the world have affected my writing of poetry. And perhaps poetry is the most powerful medium in which to express some of the most pressing issues in the world today,” notes Habib, whose poems include “To a Suicide Bomber” and “A Prayer for Gaza.”

A graduate of Oxford University, Habib is the author of the book The Dissident Voice: Poems of N.M. Rashed: Translated from the Urdu and has been published in the Journal of the History of Ideas and the British Journal of Aesthetics. The Rutgers–Camden scholar recently researched Islam in Malaysia on a Fulbright Scholarship.
