Rutgers–Camden student pursues career in forensic accounting through internship with the FBI

Sarah Katt
CAMDEN — After four years of cracking text books and decoding final exams, Sarah Katt is ready to do some investigating for the FBI.

The Rutgers–Camden senior, who is graduating May 24, is preparing for her second summer interning at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.  Katt will return to the nation’s capital in June after also gaining hands-on experience at the bureau’s Philadelphia offices during the fall and spring semesters.

The Moorestown resident is working toward her ultimate goal: to become a certified fraud examiner for the FBI.

“It’s been a great experience,” Katt says of her internship. “I love accounting, but I also love getting deeper into it. The forensic accountant’s job is to trace everything and find where the money goes. I like the idea of figuring out what they did and how they did it.”

Katt, a Moorestown High School graduate, is a finance and accounting double major at the Camden Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She works with the FBI’s financial managers during her internship.

Katt says she has plans to study forensic accounting in graduate school and has applied to graduate programs at the University at Albany, State University of New York, the University of Charleston, and West Virginia University.

At Rutgers–Camden, Katt is a member of the Honors College, a community of student and faculty scholars who participate in a challenging academic program that includes honors seminars, junior and senior year projects, and extracurricular activities.

Katt is also president of the Rutgers–Camden Finance Association and is on the Student Advisory Board.

“Meeting all of the people here has been a great experience,” Katt says. “I joined everything I could to stay involved. It’s been a great experience because I’ve been able to grow as a person. I feel like I’m more well-rounded now and that’s something that has helped me in the FBI. You learn how to interact with different people and be the best you could be.”
