Annual recognition ceremony recognizes employment milestones
Alan Rosenthal, professor of public policy political science with 40 years of service at Rutgers, was able to become an expert in state legislatures – writing books, mentoring students, and traveling to state capitals across the country – because of the university’s tolerance for his interests, passions, and work style.
“These 40 years have not been work, not really a job,” said Rosenthal, who served as director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics for 20 years from 1974 to 1994. Rosenthal delivered remarks May 10 at the annual Faculty Service Recognition Luncheon, which honors faculty with 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 years of employment. “I am most appreciative of Rutgers for permitting me to both indulge my passion for politics and collect a pay check.”

The luncheon, held at Neilson Dining Hall on Douglass Campus, honored 12 other faculty members for 40 years of service. President Richard L. McCormick and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Philip Furmanski hosted the luncheon and greeted each honoree as they were presented with gifts. Each addressed the audience, as did Rosenthal’s former student Jillian Curtis, who is student representative to the Board of Governors and a graduate of the Class of 2007 with majors in history and political science.
Other faculty members honored for 40 years of service were: Ching-I Tu (SAS), Asian languages and cultures; Shaw S. Wang (SOE), chemical and biochemical engineering; Sharon Plahy Blase (SEBS), family and consumer science; Scott Whitener (MGSA), music; Rudolph W. Kluiber (FASN), chemistry; Ronald T. Hyman (GSE), educational theory, policy, and administration; Nathan H. Hart (SAS), cell biology and neuroscience; Larry Zamick (SAS), physics and astronomy; L. John Gagliardi (FASC), physics; Frank Askin, School of Law–Newark; Yale H. Ferguson (FASN), political science; and Harvey Waterman (GS-NB), associate dean for academic affairs.
Thirty-six faculty were honored for 30 years of service to Rutgers, 63 were honored for 20 years of service, and 69 were honored for 10 years of service.
