Group includes 16 students ranked first or second in their senior classes
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Ninety Rutgers Presidential Scholars from throughout New Jersey will be welcomed to Rutgers when the class of 2013 arrives on campus this month. Among the group – the largest number ever to enroll – are 11 who ranked first in their graduating classes and five who ranked second.Rutgers Presidential Scholars are first-year students who graduated in the top 5 percent of their high school class with combined SAT verbal and math scores of 1500 or higher.
Students selected for this elite scholarship also must complete an essay in which they demonstrate their potential contribution to Rutgers’ vibrant and diverse community through a record of specialized talents, leadership, community service and work experience.
This year’s Presidential Scholars are from 63 New Jersey communities. An additional six Presidential Scholars are from out of state. The program awards full tuition and honors program admission to recipients.
The accomplished group includes School of Engineering students Jacob Jaslove of Warren, who won a New York City robotics competition, and Michael Oaks of Medford, who has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Angela Wan of New Milford, a state debate champion, will be a student in the School of Arts and Sciences.
“The largest group of Presidential Scholars to date reflects the growing number of high-achieving New Jersey students who are applying to and enrolling at Rutgers,” said Courtney McAnuff, vice president for enrollment management. “The profile of our first-year students continues to rise as these students and their families consider the benefits, both economic and academic, of staying in New Jersey and attending their state university.”
This fall, more than 7,000 first-year students are expected to enroll universitywide and total university enrollment is expected to set a new record.
Following is a list of New Jersey’s Presidential Scholars entering Rutgers this fall:
