GIULIANI AND CLINTON LEAD IN NEW JERSEY, BUT DYNAMICS DEFY CONVENTIONAL WISDOM

Giulianis favorability rating tumbles, and the gender gap is less than gaping for Clinton

-->

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton hold sizable leads in the Garden State as they pursue their parties nominations for president, according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

But New Jersey voters are holding increasingly negative views of Giuliani, whose favorability rating has dropped 18 points since June 2006. That may be good news for Clinton, who has pulled into a virtual tie with Giuliani in terms of the general election in New Jersey. But her lead among women in a match-up with Giuliani is smaller than the leads that Al Gore and John Kerry held over George Bush in New Jersey at various points in the 2000 and 2004 campaigns.
