Newark, NJ – Rutgers Law Record, an online journal at Rutgers School of Law–Newark, will host the symposium “Iraq at the Crossroads: Protecting Refugees, Rescuing Our Allies, and Empowering Iraqi Law” at the law school from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm on Friday, October 24. The event boasts such speakers as Rajiv Chandrasekaran, national editor of the Washington Post and author of the best-selling book Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone; Judge Ra'id Juhi, chief investigative judge of the Saddam Hussein trial; Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-NJ); Bob Carey, chair of Refugee Council USA; and Kirk Johnson of the List Project. The symposium will also screen three short films: “Life Interrupted: The Iraqi Refugee Crisis” by Lori Grinker, “Iraqis in Egypt: Time Is Running Out” by Joshua van Praag, and "Departed for Damascus" by Marie Maciak.

The event is the work of third-year law student and Rutgers Law Record editor-in-chief Kevin Murphy, an Iraq War veteran. During Murphy's deployment in Baghdad as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, he witnessed first-hand the plight of Iraqi refugees and those Iraqis who became U.S. friends and allies.

The event is open to the public. A $14 registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, and reserves a seat. Register and pay online at www.lawrecord.com.
