Statement by Executive Dean Douglas Greenberg, School of Arts and Sciences, on the Death of Tomas Eloy Martinez
The Rutgers University community is saddened to hear of the death of Tomas Eloy Martinez, professor of Spanish and Portuguese in the School of Arts and Sciences, and former director of the Center on Latin American Studies. 
Prof. Martinez, who came to Rutgers in 1995, broadened the scope of the Center, attracting scholars and students from many disciplines. Throughout his time here, Prof. Martinez remained active in the wider world, producing scholarship, journalism, and novels.
His friends and colleagues remember him for his kindness, generosity and steady good humor, despite a life touched by danger and tragedy. Those who remember Prof. Martinez in his public character will remember him as a defender of justice, a partisan of truth, and a brave man.
