(NEWARK, NJ, JUNE 26, 2007) -- Come fall, undergraduate students at Rutgers in Newark will be able to take entry-level courses in Korean, Chinese and Japanese, thanks to the technology of distance learning and a collaboration between Rutgers departments in Newark and New Brunswick.

The Rutgers-Newark Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literature (CMLL) is teaming up with the Rutgers Division of Continuous Education & Outreach and the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, both in New Brunswick , to offer the additional languages at Rutgers in Newark. The university is now accepting registration for both matriculated and non-matriculated students interested in Elementary Chinese, Elementary Korean and Elementary Japanese, which will be given in specially equipped smart classrooms in the Rutgers Center for Law and Justice, 123 Washington St., Newark.

Each of the four-credit courses is available through CMLL, in the Newark College of Arts and Sciences.

Distance learning courses utilize a combination of videoconferencing and online technologies.

The courses are a response to on-campus demand as students prepare themselves to work and live in a global economy, notes CMLL department chair Asela Laguna-Diaz. Depending on response to the courses, the department will consider adding intermediary-level courses, taught by part-time lecturers, in the future.
