IBM and Rutgers Launch Supercomputer Institute

IBM and Rutgers have announced the establishment of the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2), New Jersey’s Center for Advanced Computation. The institute, the only one of its kind in New Jersey, helps small, medium, and large companies gain access to state-of-the-art supercomputing technology. When installation concludes in 2013, Rutgers will house one of the world’s 10 most powerful academic supercomputers.

Technology Commercialization/Tech Transfer

The Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) transfers Rutgers-patented technologies to the marketplace, fosters university/industry collaboration, and promotes products and services that benefit society.

The Center for Innovative Ventures of Emerging Technologies (CIVET) helps faculty and students transition technology innovations from Rutgers think tanks into the marketplace. CIVET, an initiative of the School of Engineering, also helps business identify cutting-edge innovations in which to invest, establish research/consulting partnerships with Rutgers researchers, and tap into Rutgers laboratory facilities.

Incubators and Small Business Development

Rutgers provides services and support to New Jersey entrepreneurs and small businesses.

  • Food Industry

    The national award-winning Rutgers Food Innovation Center provides business and technology expertise to small and midsize food companies. You can develop and test your food products here. Since 2001, staff has assisted more than 1,000 companies and entrepreneurs in every New Jersey county and helped commercialize 32 products.

    The Center for Advanced Food Technology (CAFT) works with entrepreneurs as well as large global companies to help bring their product concepts to fruition. CAFT's Food Development and Manufacturing Center is home to a number of small New Jersey food and ingredient companies that develop and manufacture products in the center. Technicians and staff are available to instruct, supervise, and assist in conducting test work. The Product Development Kitchen is available for clients interested in producing preliminary product samples; it contains typical bench-scale and restaurant-sized kitchen equipment and is available on a daily or weekly basis. The Quality Control Laboratory contains basic instrumentation and laboratory materials necessary for bench-top ingredient, packaging, and product testing during the formative stages of R&D projects and is also available on a short-term basis.

  • Green Business

    At the EcoComplex Environmental Incubator green business center, you can develop and test your green products and processes. Since 2005, the EcoComplex, with its Environmental Incubator, has helped create 587 "green startup" jobs; nearly two-thirds of 22 graduating companies have stayed in New Jersey.

  • Rutgers–Camden Tech Business Incubator

    Rutgers Camden Technology Campus, Inc. is a mixed-use business incubator that helps new businesses thrive in Camden. Startups in the incubator employ 220; 16 of 19 graduating companies have stayed in New Jersey.

  • Urban Entrepreneurship

    The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development promotes and fosters urban entrepreneurs who actively seek socially conscious urban renaissance.

  • Small Business Development

    The New Jersey Small Business Development Centers network helps New Jersey’s small businesses succeed. The statewide office, headquartered at Rutgers–Newark, serves all 21 New Jersey counties through regional centers and affiliate offices. The Small Business Development Center at Rutgers–Newark serves the Essex County area and the Small Business Development Center at Rutgers–Camden is the southern region’s primary office. Most services are provided at low or no cost. In calendar year 2010, the program

    • helped create/retain 9,582 jobs in New Jersey;
    • helped 715 clients start new businesses;
    • facilitated $24.8 million in financing for clients;
    • provided 4,929 clients with 15,880 hours of counseling; and
    • helped 51.2% (2,525) of all clients counseled to establish businesses.
