FY2009 State Budget
On February 26, 2008, Governor Jon S. Corzine announced his fiscal year 2008–09 budget proposal. It was, in his words, "a very tough budget" that called for steep and widespread funding reductions and the elimination of three state departments. While this budget was hardly good news for Rutgers, it is the reality of an extremely difficult financial climate.

The governor’s budget proposal marked the beginning of a four-month process that included public hearings by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee and resulted in passage of a budget bill (A2800/S2009) by the legislature on June 23, 2008. The Governor signed the bill into law on June 30, 2008.

The fiscal year 2009 spending plan approved by Governor Jon S. Corzine for New Jersey includes a 10.8 percent decrease in base funding for Rutgers, along with partial funding of negotiated salary increases in the coming year. The university recognizes the extraordinary fiscal challenges faced by the state and will work to streamline operations and reduce costs, while striving to protect Rutgers’ core mission of teaching, research, and service.
