Rutgers' Position on Current Issues

University Perspectives

Rutgers’ position on current issues involving the university:

On April 5, 2013, President Robert L. Barchi accepted the resignation of athletic director Tim Pernetti. This action follows the termination of basketball coach Mike Rice’s employment.

President Robert L. Barchi has launched an initiative to develop a universitywide strategy that outlines an ambitious but realistic vision along with clear plans and goals for moving Rutgers forward.

Rutgers has been admitted to the nation’s premier higher education consortium of top-tier research universities effective July 1, 2013. The CIC, which includes all Big Ten Conference institutions and the University of Chicago, works to advance its members’ academic missions, leverage campus resources, share expertise, and expand academic and research opportunities for students and faculty.

On August 22, 2012, Governor Chris Christie signed legislation to restructure higher education in the state, effective July 1, 2013. The New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act, passed by the New Jersey Legislature on June 28, 2012, integrates all units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (except University Hospital in Newark and the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford) into Rutgers while preserving Rutgers’ autonomy and independence as well as its presence in Camden. The Rutgers Board of Governors and Board of Trustees approved the changes proposed in the legislation at their November 19, 2012, meeting.
