Let the Games Begin

First game of intercollegiate football

In 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played the first game of intercollegiate football on a New Brunswick field near the Raritan River. Rutgers won, by a score of 6 to 4. The College Avenue Gym now occupies that field. Get the full story behind the historic game.

The Scarlet R Club

Sports Clubs

Sports ClubsLong before the advent of varsity athletics, Rutgers students were privately challenging students from other schools to meet for a little friendly competition. Today, these student-run sports clubs, still a vibrant part of Rutgers life, may be instructional, competitive, or both. Competitive clubs play against other schools and leagues across the country.
