Athletics at Rutgers

Athletics at Rutgers

Rutgers is home to a first-class roster of exciting teams whose athletes play hard. The State University of New Jersey fronts a resurgent football team, which is the only NCAA Division I football team in the Greater New Jersey/New York metropolitan region. The university is also where Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer leads the always thrilling Rutgers Scarlet Knights women’s basketball team. Rutgers teamwork on the field powers a pride that resonates through the stands.

Let the Games Begin

First game of intercollegiate football

In 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played the first game of intercollegiate football on a New Brunswick field near the Raritan River. Rutgers won, by a score of 6 to 4. The College Avenue Gym now occupies that field. Get the full story behind the historic game.

Scholar-Athletes

Rutgers places as high a priority on its athletes' academics as on their prowess on the field. In the past four seasons, four Rutgers Scarlet Knights programs have posted perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores of 1,000. In rankings released in May 2011, women's gymnastics was first in the nation among its peers. Football was second in the nation. Women's tennis and men's and women's cross country also posted perfect scores of 1,000 and top 10 percent national rankings.

Sports Clubs

Sports ClubsLong before the advent of varsity athletics, Rutgers students were privately challenging students from other schools to meet for a little friendly competition. Today, these student-run sports clubs, still a vibrant part of Rutgers life, may be instructional, competitive, or both. Competitive clubs play against other schools and leagues across the country.
