Student Honors

Rutgers students are smart, diverse, ambitious, and engaged with the world around them. Their hard work and academic achievements have been recognized with major national and international awards.

Rutgers students have been named Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Fellows, Gates Cambridge Scholars, Churchill Scholars, Goldwater Scholars, Clarendon Scholars, Truman Scholars, Woodrow Wilson Scholars, and Udall Scholars. They have received support from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Research Council, and the Japanese Education Ministry. These awards have given them the chance to pursue advanced study and original research around the world.

 
Gates Scholars

Devinn Lambert and Kelvin Mei

Two Rutgers seniors, Devinn Lambert and Kelvin Mei, are among 39 students nationwide to earn 2013 Gates Scholarships for graduate study at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the scholarships cover all fees and living expenses.

Both students plan to pursue master's of philosophy degrees–Lambert in plant sciences and Mei in physics. Learn more.

Overcoming Addiction to Become a Truman Scholar

Ben Chin

Junior Ben Chin is Rutgers’ ninth Truman Scholar–the second to come to the university through its Mountainview Project, which helps ex-offenders transition from incarceration to higher education. Chin, who helped found Young People in Recovery, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving access to support services for young drug and substance abusers, plans to pursue either a law degree or a master’s in public policy. Recent Recognition

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation

David KolchmeyerTwo undergraduates have earned 2013 Goldwater Scholarships, awarded for excellence in mathematics, science, and engineering. The winners are juniors David Kolchmeyer (pictured top), a physics major at the School of Arts and Sciences, and Josh Yarmush, a biomedical Josh Yarmushengineering major at the School of Engineering. The scholarship provides support for the students’ remaining years of college.

 

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Two Rutgers seniors, Devinn Lambert, a School of Environmental and Biological Sciences biotechnology major, and Kelvin Mei, a physics major in the School of Arts and Sciences, are among 39 students nationwide to earn Gates Scholarships to pursue graduate studies at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Each student’s award for the nine-month master’s program is expected to be worth about $38,000.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation

School of Arts and Sciences junior Ben Chin was awarded a 2013 Truman Scholarship. The national award provides up to $30,000 for graduate study to college juniors with “exceptional leadership potential” who are committed to careers in public service.
 

Henry Luce Foundation

Matthew CortlandMatthew Cortland, who graduated from Rutgers in 2011, has been selected as a 2013 Luce Scholar. The program places Americans in Asia to enhance their understanding of Asian countries and cultures.
 

Fulbright Program

Dimetri DuckreyTwenty-eight Rutgers students have been awarded Fulbright grants for 2013–2014, an all-time high for the university. U.S. Department of State

Kimberley ThomasSix students have received 2013 Critical Language Scholarships. They are Graduate School–New Brunswick students Kate Imy, Douglas Jones, and Kimberley Thomas (pictured); School of Engineering senior Seth Goonetilleke; College of Nursing junior Dina Syarief; and School of Arts and Sciences sophomore Zachary White.


Humanity In Action Inc.

Elorm Avakame, a public health major in the School of Arts and Sciences, has been named a 2013 Humanity In Action Fellow.
 

TED

Mohammad HerzallahMohammad M. Herzallah, a doctoral candidate at Rutgers–Newark, has been awarded a 2013 TED Fellowship for his efforts to set up the first infrastructure for neuroscience research in Palestine.
