Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Senior Amy Zhang has been awarded a prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship for 2011 to pursue graduate study at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Zhang will pursue a master of philosophy degree in advanced computer science.
Hertz Foundation
Kyle Loh has been selected to receive one of the foundation’s 15 doctoral fellowships valued at more than $250,000 for five years of graduate study. Loh, who graduated from Rutgers in 2010 at the age of 16, will pursue his Ph.D. at the Stanford School of Medicine beginning in fall 2011.
Fulbright Program
Thirteen Rutgers undergraduates have been named Fulbright grantees for 2011. David DeMair won an extremely competitive grant to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in the United Kingdom. In addition, Giuseppe Cespedes (pictured) will pursue work in Brazil; Melissa Chedid (pictured) in Bulgaria; Sarah Esmi in Spain; Charles Hornstra in Malaysia; Ed Lochocki in Indonesia; Jessica Martin in Turkey; Esther Min, Jacob Phillips, and Artemus Werts in Korea; Glenn Poole in Germany; and Elizabeth Sahner and Diana Won in Colombia.
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships
Two Rutgers undergraduates earned 2011 Goldwater Scholarships, awarded for excellence in mathematics, science, and engineering. The winners are juniors Kiersten Ruisard (pictured) and Albert Yu. The scholarships provide support for the students' remaining years of college.
New Jersey Heroes
First Lady Mary Pat Christie recognized senior Matthew Cortland (pictured), junior Alex Lewis, and their fraternity Theta Delta Chi for developing BrosUniteD, a program in which fraternity brothers serve as mentors to adolescent boys with autism. New Jersey Heroes showcases the positive impact people and organizations can have on the state.
International Sculpture Center
Jason Carey-Sheppard, an M.F.A. student at Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts, received the 2011 student award for his sculpture As It Is Above So It Is Below. The piece can be seen at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J., through April 8, 2012.
United States Department of State
Junior Jeremy Bender received a Critical Language Scholarship to study in Turkey. The program provides fully funded group-based intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences for students studying critical-need foreign languages.
